WSUS Client Always Reports Reboot Pending

    Question

  • I have a single client (Win7 SP1) that installs all new updates but even after reboot, that client reports that a reboot is pending for all updates.  That client does in fact have the updates installed (they are in the list of installed updates) and it is now up to 27 updates pending reboot.  That list just keep growing.

I have tried blowing out the Software Distribution folder as well as deleting the pending.xml file however that file simply recreates itself after reboot with all the old values thus continuing to report all the pending reboots.

Any ideas?  I would greatly appreciate any help!

Here's a snippet of the log:

2011-11-15    13:49:53:952    1144    149c    Misc    WARNING: IsSessionNonstandardUI: session 65536 is an unknown session type 0; treating it as a standard session

Some of those errors are because Windows Update is disabled for all users, they have no control.  I also suppress all notifications.  All machines shutdown at the end of the day anyway.

  • When the machine is in the reboot pending state, it will create the following key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired

Once the reboot occurs, this key will be deleted. We can check to see if this key exists on this client.

If the key exist then we need to remove the key and restart Windows Update service.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for posting here.

I have tried blowing out the Software Distribution folder

If the WUA is corrupted on the client, but it seems not.

2011-11-15 13:49:53:999 1144 1314 AU Windows Update is disabled by policy for user

It seems that you were doing some misconfiguration on your GroupPolicy.Check out with rsop.msc on the client side to see whether there were some misconfiguration. You can post your GP configuration here for us.

    Best regards,

    Clarence

  • Thank you for your reply.  This user is using the same GPO as everyone else.

    COMPUTER

Configure Automatic Updates - Enabled (4, every day)

Specify inranet MS update service location - Enabled

Automatic Updates detection frequency - Enabled

Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation - Enabled

No auto-restart with logged on user for scheduled automatic updates - Enabled

    USER

Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option - Enabled

Remove access to use all Windows Update features - Enabled

Both the GPO and users rsop.msc match.

  • Hi,

Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option - Enabled

Remove access to use all Windows Update features - Enabled

Make the above two settings to disabled.

No auto-restart with logged on user for scheduled automatic updates - Enabled

If the status is set to Enabled, Automatic Updates will not restart a computer automatically during a scheduled installation if a user is logged in to the computer. Instead, Automatic Updates will notify the user to restart the computer.

I guess restarting your computer may not trigger the update installation without hitting the pop-up restarting pane.

My suggestion is to disable the related above three settings which may result in Reports Reboot Pending to see whether it works.

    Best regards,

    Clarence

  • After making the changes and rebooting a few times throughout the day the machine still reports Reboot Pending.

For what it's worth, all our clients are setup the same way and no one else has had a problem since WSUS 1.0.  It is our policy to not allow users to apply their own updates.  Security updates are applied whether they like it or not :)

  • Hi,

Pls do the following again on this computer:

    1. Record the system time

    2. Stop the Automatic Updates service, rename the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.OLD, and restart the Automatic Updates service.

    3. Run this command: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

    4. Wait 30 minutes.

    5. Post the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log starting at the time recorded in Step #1

    Best regards,

    Clarence

  • When the machine is in the reboot pending state, it will create the following key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired

Once the reboot occurs, this key will be deleted. We can check to see if this key exists on this client.

If the key exist then we need to remove the key and restart Windows Update service.

  • Great, thanks Ketan!  So far it's behaving.  I did this yesterday and for all of today it hasn't reported anything.  I am however worried as to what will happen when a new update comes around, if it'll get stuck again.  I'll keep an eye on it.

Any clue what the issue was?  Why it wasn't clearing out the registry?

    Thanks again!

  • We don’t know the root cause for the issue but this is very rare instance. It could be one single update which might have caused this issue.

May be reinstalling the “Reboot Required” patches one at a time could have helped in identifying that single update.

  • Well, after this last patch Tuesday lots of reboot pending patches came out.  This workstation is once again stuck in reboot pending mode even after being shutdown and brought back up again.  So I doubt it was the fault of any specific update.

I also discovered this odd issue, not sure if it's related.  The machine is set to -8 timezone which is correct, the BIOS has the proper time and date as does windows however if I run:

    systeminfo /s \\MACHINENAME | find "Time:"

It tells me the last boot time was 7 days ago.  No matter when I run it, it always tells me 7 days ago.  As well as being 6 hours back.  so it says 5:11AM when it's really 11:02AM.

I have gone as far as shutting down the laptop and pulling it's battery and starting it back up today.  Still says last boot time was 7 days ago.

  • HI,

Can you send the entire windowsupdate.log to blrforum-at-microsoft-com?

  • I sure can.  However I blew it out the last time I played with it.  As soon as more updates come in and it does it again I can email it to you.

On a side note, since changing the policy config back to default did not help I let the machine go back to it's GP defaults.

  • I'm in the same situation as JEmlay. AD environment (w2003) with Wsus by gpo. The only diference is the client OS. My clients are windows XP insted of windows 7, but I'm having the same (exactly) error. All clients are using the same GPO and installing the same updates from wsus and only a few of them (2-3 %) are requesting a "reboot pending" always.

I tried a lot of things, like reinstalling the wua, rename softwaredistribuition floder, reseting client wsus id, etc ... but there's no way to remove "reboot pending".

I reply this question because I think it's exactly the same error, but if you prefer to create a new question I will do it.

    Thanks

  • "but if you prefer to create a new question I will do it."

Nah, not at all.  Jump on in, the water's warm!

I'm about to send my latest log to KetanT.

  • Please provide the details found under the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate

Also we need to know if the problem is update specific. When we had the problem before, what was the update being installed at that time?

The log shows it is trying to install “Definition Update for Microsoft Forefront Client Security - KB977939”.

  • I checked his laptop and a couple other computers.  There are no keys under that path on any of my machines.

This has been happening for about 9 months now.  There is no specific update.  If I force clear it, the laptop goes back to normal until the next set of updates (usually patch tuesday).  The updates that are currently pending reboot:

KB2656356 (Security Update .NET Framework 3.5.1)

KB2584146 (Security Update for Windows 7)

KB2585542 (Security Update for Windows 7)

KB2631813 (Security Update for Windows 7)

KB2644615 (Security Update for Windows 7)

" The log shows it is trying to install “Definition Update for Microsoft Forefront Client Security - KB977939”."

That's always going to be the case.  Microsoft pushes 3+ updates a day.

  • I’m not sure if you have tried running Fixit and SUR Tool from below links. Please run these and see if it helps.

How do I reset Windows Update components?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Run System Update Readiness Tool from here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

If the problem still exist then we may have to gather more data.

  • Sorry it takes so long between updates.  I can only work on this once a month (patch Tuesday) and last month there were no updates that required a reboot.

SUR didn't do anything for me beside giving me an OK.

Fixit wont run because it tells me the system needs to be rebooted and of course a reboot doesn't help because it's in constant reboot mode.  Safe mode didn't help either.
