kms on server 2012

    Question

  • Hi All,

i install server 2012 with 2012 kms host  license.

now i know if i enter the kms of 2012 license it valid all the way down for win 2012,2008,8...   to activated

but i only want to activate with that kms is win 7 and 8 and no servers.

  • Hi,

a KMShost running upon WindowsServer OS will always issue activation for WindowsServer KMSclients and below.
You can use Windows7 or Windows8 as KMShost, since those cannot issue activations for WindowsServer.
Or, you can consider other networking options such as do not publish KMS into your DNS (so all Win7/Win8 clients would need to be manually configured to locate your KMShost), or use IPSec or similar to prevent the TCP1688 packets between server network and KMShost.

    Hi,

there are many guides on the web, here is one:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831794.aspx

The steps will depend upon the OS of your intended KMShost machine.

You can use KMS, or you can use ADBA. (you could use both, or may need both, since ADBA is only suitable for when your client machines are Win8/WS2012 or Win81/WS2012R2.

  • Hi DonPick,

I configured KMS server as you show and success.

But I have some problem which i don't understand.

I have 1 MAK key and 1 CSVLK key. When I add MAK key into  VAMT 3.0, i can count remaining activatone of this key, but when I add CSVLK key into VAMT, i can not count remaining activation of this key.

    Can you help me!

For CSVLK, I think you cannot retrieve the remaining activations. (I have not tried this).

  • Hi DonPick,

If a computer actived by KMS server. After a long time, I unjoin this computer out of domain and don't use it.

Can I take again the key which actived for this computer?

I'm not sure I understand your question?
With Volume Activation (both MAK and also KMS), when an activation occurs, that activation is permanently consumed and cannot be "recovered" nor "returned".

KMS has an unlimited activation quantity, it will activate anything/everything, there is no "maximum limit".
