Windows 2008 Remote Desktop Services Licencing issue

    Question

  • We have a Remote Desktop Server 2008 R2 server. This server is trying to acquire licences from a Remote Desktop Licencing Server 2008 (not R2). The server can communicate with the licencing server but then comes up with the following error :

To identify possible licensing issues, administrator credentials for license server are required. Provide administrator credentials for the Remote Desktop Services licence server.

The administrator of the licencing server is advising that as the Licencing Server is running RD Licence Server 2008 and the Remote Desktop Server is running RD 2008 R2 that the Licence Server cannot issue R2 licences to the RDS Server. Is this correct? If so, I presume that we require an RD Licence Server 2008 R2 built with the appropriate licences.

    Thanks

  • Hi Anthony,

Licenses can be installed and issued on both 2008 and 2008R2.

  • Hi,
Remote Desktop Server 2008 R2 server can obtain licenses from a Remote Desktop Licencing Server 2008. Please check out the blog mentioned by Kudrat.

Where do you get this error :
To identify possible licensing issues, administrator credentials for license server are required. Provide administrator credentials for the Remote Desktop Services licence server.

I guess you get it when you run licensing diagnosis.
Licensing diagnosis tool requires license server administrator privileges to query licensing information from a license server.
Just provide the license server administrator credentials and you are good to go.

    Thanks

  • Yes, the hotfix has been installed on the licence server now. I am still getting the same error. We have a hardware firewall between the Licence Server & RDS Server. Currently on the firewall we have the following rules configured :

Outgoing protocols 1, 135, 139 & 445 from the RDS to the licence server.

Do we need any incoming rules for this to work?

  • Anthony,

Have a look at this post:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/rds/archive/2008/02/01/licensing-diagnosis-problems-and-resolutions.aspx

There are several problems and possible resolutions. See if some of them are applicable to your situation.

  • FYI> I am experiecing the same problem as Anthony - Hotfix 968074 applied to 2008 SP2 server and 2008 R2 server still has problems when users log in via RDP. Here is the Kicker - Not when the Administrator user logs in - just other users.

They are presented with the message about not being able to reach a TSL server. If the admin logs in - no problem. If user logs in and goes to Licensing diagnosis and provides credentials - no problem.

    Any further ideas?
