500GB of disk space gone "missing"

    Question

  • Windows Server 2008R2 running Exchange 2010.  I've got the Exchange data files on Drive D.  All of a sudden about 500GB of disk space has gone missing.  Even with system and hidden files shown, it doesn't even come close to adding up.  In Explorer it says Total Size 696GB, 30.8GB free.  The only folders on this drive are sized as follows:

    $RECYCLE BIN - 258 bytes

    LiveVaultData - 383MB

Program Files (where the Exchange files are) - 160GB

    System Volume Information - 0

    Chkdsk shows

     730592255 KB total disk space.
     700979708 KB in 5876 files.
          3256 KB in 35 indexes.
             0 KB in bad sectors.
94395 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
      29514896 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
182648063 total allocation units on disk.
7378724 allocation units available on disk.

Any suggestions?  This is a server used by 4 time zones, some operating 24/7, so I need to keep any "reboot" suggestions to a minimum.

    Thanks.

  • It's definitely LiveVault shadows that are taking up the space.  Unfortunately vssadmin won't let me delete them, so I've just killed the backups until I hear back from LiveVault/Autonomy/HP.

  • That gives me similar results - no explanation for 500GB of disk space.  Actually it's gone down by 400MB since I started looking into this an hour ago.

Du v1.4 - report directory disk usage

    Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

    Files:        411
    Directories:  23
    Size:         173,123,207,040 bytes
    Size on disk: 9,916,223,488 bytes

"Size on disk" doesn't seem at all right.  173GB is about right for the actual size of what's on there.

Another thing that kind of ticks me off is that I have "unlimited" SA support (allegedly), but every time I select the product, Microsoft's web site says that page isn't available.  Neat.

  • When I run du.exe -c -v >C:\du.csv then add up column A I get 203,272,577 KB. chkdsk reports 218,777,744 KB Explorer reports 224,161,554,432 bytes. I'd look some more, you might be missing it.

  • The output from du corresponds to what I see in Explorer - 169GB used.  Chkdsk says 702GB used of 730GB total disk space.  Explorer shows the volume size as 696GB and I can account for the files that du says are there.  So about 530GB of disk space is unaccounted for.  Chkdsk apparently knows where it is (or thinks it does), but I don't know how to get any more detail out of it.

  • Here's something mildly interesting though.  If I go into the properties of drive D: and look at the Shadow Copies tab, it shows "d:\ Disabled", but then shows "Used:  517751MB on D:\".  a) how can there be shadow copies if shadow copies are disabled?  b) Aren't shadow copies in System Volume Information?  That shows a size of 0.  Of course that folder is also locked down to just SYSTEM, and that folder isn't even showing in du.

I also see that the LiveVault backup has been running for an inordinately long time.  It's currently 84% complete.  Hopefully it completes before I run out of disk space, and then I'll change the Shadow Copy size for drive D to something more reasonable like 50GB.

  • Nope, it was what you suggested - du -c -v.

  • Did you run it from C:\ (or D:\ ) ? I got 27000 rows returned.

  • What was particularly irritating was that resetting the allowed Shadow Copy size on that volume didn't appear to have any immediate effect.  Bounced the LiveVault software and the Shadow Copy size kept increasing.  Not being in a position to reboot the server, I just stopped the backup service and left it until I heard back from Autonomy/HP.  They came back with nothing useful at all.  Windows must run some kind of scheduled thing because after several hours of just sitting there like that, "all of a sudden" the Shadow Copy size immediately dropped down to where I'd set it.  Restarted the backup software and it's now running fine.
