    Question

  • What is the use of software distribution folder on windows server 2008 r2 datacentre?

My server Windows Server 2008  R2 Datacentre  is running out of space. I need to reduce the size of C drive. Can I remove (delete)  the

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution  folders? If  I do so what will be the cause of doing this?

I will be much appreciate on this solution.

  • Hi,

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution is Windows Update temporary software Distribution folder, it contain below files:

If you are using Forefront, Forefront database file (tmp.edb)

Windows Update or Automatic Update database file (Datastore.edb)

    WSUS log files

Downloaded updates, but after the updates get installed, most updates are deleted automatically.

Form some MS KB, we found rename the SoftwareDistribution folder is a method to fix installation issue. So you can remove this folder, but following issues occur when you use this method:

    1. Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update
    2. When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed
    3. If you current receive updates from Microsoft Update and form Windows Update, you will have to reselect this option form the Windows Update website.

  • Windows use this folder to download and manage the updates applicable to your operating system and applications. If you delete this folder it will automatically be recreated next time Windows Updates check for updates.
