Group Policy Preferences - add local user to local administrator group

    Question

  • Hello,
I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.  I'm using group policy preference to add a local user to the workstation (virtual machines in this case) and then add that newly created user to the Administrators group on the workstation.  I'm not having any luck in this.  I've broken this out into two GPOs that are linked to the OU these VMs belong to.  I've got the processing order correctly set.   I'm sure that both GPO are processing, as the user is created, and the description for the Administrators group is updated, but the user doesn't belong to the administrator group.

Since the user doesn't exist currently what I'm using in the second GPO that adds the user to the group is

    %COMPUTERNAME%\appcompat

My thinking here is that because each vm is a different name this should grab the appcompat user account that exists on the workstation, and then add it to the group.

There are no errors in the log...any where I can check to find more about adding local users through Policy Preference?

My domain is 2003 functional level, and my workstations (vms) are Windows 7 x86.

    Thanks for the help
    r/

    John
