NTBACKUP Fails with this message "Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff."

    Question

  • Hello,

We have a Windows 2003 Server (Standard Edition) R2 SP2 that NTBACKUP jobs are failing with the following:

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Test.bkf created 7/29/2011 at 10:06 AM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup.

    ----------------------
The operation did not successfully complete.
    ----------------------

We found applie din the fix in KB 940032, but that did not resolve the problem.

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

You mentioned the regster steps are already performed. But please have a try to do the following steps again and check if any error occurs:

    regsvr32 /u eventcls.dll and then regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

    Again unregistered and re-registered eventcls.dll and es.dll

    reboot

    Check if any error occurs.

Also test to delete all old Shadow Copies by acccessing <Drive> Properties --> Shaodow Copies --> Delete Now.

  • Hello Shaon,

We are still having this problem after uninstalling the abti-virus software.

I was able to unregister and re-register eventcls.dll.

I was able to unregister es.dll, but when I tried to re-register es.dll I got the following error:

    ---------------------------
    RegSvr32
    ---------------------------
    DllRegisterServer in es.dll failed.
    Return code was: 0x80040206
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

Please advise on how to correct this error.

Also, work with our backup softwrae vendor (Storage Craft), they indicated the VSS needs to be reapired based on the testing they had me do.  How do we repair VSS?

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • I had the same NTBackup error and I downloaded MicrosoftFixit50633.  It fixed it without any reboots!  Worked like a charm. :)

  • Hello, Shaon,

I'm getting the same error when running ntbackup. I've followed all steps to troubleshooting, but no luck. The es.dll is where I've seen something odd.

    I unregistered es.dll successfully. When I tried to re-register it, I received:

DllRegisterServer in es.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80040206.

Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Steve
