I'm trying to run Win2k8 R2 as a Terminal Server (in app mode) and allow clients to use
the desktop experience. I've setup the remote desktop server and made sure
not to disable desktop composition. I installed the desktop experience
feature and rebooted several times.
When I go to the Personalization control panel though, I can't select the
aero theme and I see text at the bottom that says "One or more of the themes
has been disabled by Remote Desktop Connection settings." I can't figure
out what's actually causing that though. I've made sure the Win7 client is
connecting with 32 bit color and the desktop composition setting enabled.
There are a couple of group policies set in the domain for terminal servers,

The TS related policies that are set are:
Allow users to connect remotely using TS: Enabled
Restrict TS users to a single remote session: Enabled
Set Terminal Services Licensing Mode: Enabled - Per User
Limit Max Color Depth: Enabled - 32-bit
Server Authentication Certificate Template: Enabled - Name:
FWIW, I can't get aero on another Win2k8 Server configured for TS either. I
just can't figure out what policy would be preventing it. I've tried
removing the limit color depth but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
How can I get aero working on R2 as an RDP server? The error message
indicates that themes are disabled, so there has to be something it's

Moshe, from Microsoft has said that Aero is not supported in Win2k8.
The thread goes on into how to get Vista basic theme working, if this helps your experience. HOWEVER,
One thing to think about is that enabling "richer" themes is going impact your performance as it takes more bandwidth.
Hope this helps,
