application running slow on server 2008 r2 standard

    Question

  • I had developed an application with Sql server 2005 and Visual studio 2008. There are only 8-10 systems on my  company.I had purchased a new server which is running Windows server 2008 R2 standard.I had developed an application on my system running Windows XP .

The application running perfactly alright on XP system. After transferring the application on server, it is running slow as compare to XP.

There is no change in the application on XP and Server 2008.

So pls tell me the solution to speed up the application on server.

  • I would post on vc forum for that question.

2008r2 is the same core as win7. Does it run good on win7 ? Please use vc2010 if it run bad on win7 too to remake the build. (as the compiler know win7)

  • I had tried by using VS2010 and sql 2008 by installing it on server 2008 r2, but the result is same. No improvement in the performance.

  • you are really vague on the details.

    What version of .net?

    What language?

Are the same versions of .net installed on both machines? <--big deal

    What does the application do?

If you are running into an try/catch situation and you have not explicitly caught an exception that takes time...a lot of time.

Take some guesses at where it might be slow and use System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch

To measure your codes performance....use the below link for a tutorial:

    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/61964/Performance-Tests-Precise-Run-Time-Measurements-wi

Even if you now give the details I would still likely point you to the Stopwatch and to continue development while on a windows 2008 box.

  • To find the root cause of the issue use the Process Monitor from Microsoft. If I was at your place I would have installed procmon on the Windows Xp machine and take the trace.

Again I would install it on the server and take trace and then compare.

  • I am using visual basic.

I am using same version of .net on both machines.

The application is of stores department which accepts the material and issue it in the plant.

Then the report to stack ledger etc. are generated.

I am using sql 2005 to store data.

Following is the test result of code performance in Windows XP :

  • Microsoft update list nothing for SQL ?

else make like Syed's told, Use your IDE and jump into the code in debug's mode to verify what API cause your slowliness. From there it will be easier to search for a solution.
