Windows 2008 Server R2 is gone in infinite loop of restart after applying updates.

    Question

  • After installation of updates system restarted normally but it keeps saying configuring updates and restarts endlessly. From some forums it said to rename pending.xml file from winsxs folder, I  have done but its of no use. Even tried to modify some registry relating to that pending.xml; still of no use. There is no system backup point to restore.

    Is there any way left to recover the system, Please help at earliest.

  • Generally, Windows always create a restore point before installing Windows Updates. Thus System Restore in WinRE can always be a first choice. This is the most likely path to resolution when you are in an inconsistent state due to an update failure.

     

    How to boot in WinRE

    ==============

     

    1)      Please launch the VM from a Windows Server 2008 R2 disc.

    2)      When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.

    3)      Click "Next" and click "Repair your computer".

    4)      Please highlight "Windows Server 2008 R2" and click "Next".

    5)      In the dialog box titled "System Recovery Options", click "System Restore"

     

    If you can’t perform a System Restore, try using the DISM command to see which update is in a problem state:

     

    dism.exe /image:d:\ /get-packages

     

    When you run this command, you should see one or more packages listed in a Pending state. Check for known issues with the particular update or package. There may be a more direct workaround.

    If that does not return you to a working configuration, try using the DISM command to remove the update:

    dism.exe /image: C:\ /remove-package <the package name>

    If you are unable to remove it, use the /cleanup-image switch with DISM to revert the pending actions:

     

    dism.exe /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

     

    Once this is complete, try starting the PC into Windows.

    If Windows starts successfully, check for other issues on the computer, check for other issues on the computer – disk issues, memory issues, etc. You may need to perform an in-place reinstall to repair problems with the Windows installation to prevent similar issues in the future.

    First of all thanks for the reply.

    I  have tried with option 1, it showed the results as installed for all the available packages. As I know the problem exists so I went for 3rd option as nothing is useful in option 2. In option 3 it showed that it have done something successfully and asked to restart to do pending cleanup, but when i restarted it again went to the same loop.

  • According to the error in CBS log, I’m afraid that you need to do a repair installation. Please refer to the following KB:

     

    You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

  • As per the instructions written in the article you have provided link, its not at all allowing repair installation. Moving forward microsoft seems to forgot to include repair option with installation CD as was always available mostly with all operation systems installation CD. 

    Unfortunately, Microsoft dont seems to have any solution to safeguard its most promised and latest operating system.
