Suggestions for running remote exe from VM on server

    Question

  • I would like some suggestions on an "appropriate" way to remotely run an executable from an XP VM on a Windows Server. Here's some background; Currently we have pc's sitting on a manufacturing floor (harsh environment) and the upkeep is costly. We would like to set up an XP VM on a server and have a diskless client on the plant floor for the operator interface, video, mouse, and keyboard.

This application must be run under XP because of a legacy database (MSDE) and some activeX controls that will not port over to a later OS. Also there will be some remote serial I/O that will be networked back to the server via some type of serial server hardware.

My inquiry is probably more slanted towards the type of client hardware and software to access the VM on the server. Some guidance towards the appropriate technology would be appreciated.

  • A diskless workstation requires a third-party tool to connect to and boot a remote computer. The minimum hardware requirement can be variable depends on vendor. Vendors like Dell and HP provide Diskless PC solutions.

  • You may setup Windows 2003 terminal server and host your application on TS, XP based applications will most likely works on windows 2003 (Test it ;-) )

You may use thin clients on your manufacturing floor to connect TS.

Please have a loot at links below

We already have several Windows 2008R2 servers. Wouldn't Remote Desktop Services be applicable in that situation? And going forward new servers would be V2012. I would still need to run an XP VM on those servers so the question is if the remote client can hook up to the application in the VM?
