Media Player 12 cannot play MOV/MP4 video file

    Question

  • After I enable Desktop Experience in Windows Server 2008 R2, I find that the Windows Media Player 12 cannot play MOV/MP4 video files.  It seems that the WMP 12 does not have H.264 and AAC codec to decode these video files.  Is that ture?

  • Hi,

Yes, I can confirm these issue, Windows Media Player 12 in Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn’t include H.264 and AAC codec(In Windows 7, it’s included). Windows Server 2008 R2 is dedicated for server environment, I think this is one reason why it doesn’t has those code. You may have to install other codec pack to decode these video files. Thanks for your understanding.

  • That's pretty lame!  What about people using Terminal Services or Citrix XenApp servers?  you guys really need to get your stuff together on this...don't just not include something becuase you "think" we will not want or need it....let us decide!
