Saving state leaves computer OFF

    Question

  • I'm having a problem with just one vm running RedHatEnterpriseLinux.

We use BackupExec to perform backups of all or our vm's, all windows vm work perfectly... Obviously we know that backing a Linux machine can't be done the same way a Windows machine is.

From what we've seen, Backup exec will save the state for the Linux machine then backup the save state info. The problem is that randomly Hyper V will not save the state and simply let the vm in the OFF state.

Is there a way to find out why this happens??? Keep in mind that this works fine almost every day.. I would say it fails about 2-3 times in a month... every other day it just works.

Haven't been able to find any log about this.

Before anyone sugests taking this to Symantec.. I don't think this is a BackupExec problem since HyperV is the one performing the Save State function... and failing at it

  • Hi,

we use also Backup Exec 2010 to backup Hyper-V VMs, some RHEL and some OpenSuSE boxes. We haven't seen such problems yet. The Linux VMs comes always up after the save state, caused by Backup Exec to create a snapshot.

Which software versions are you using?
Are there any related events in Eventlog on Hyper-V as well as on BE side?
Are you using MS integration services on your Linux VMs?

    Kind regards

  • Thanks for the response...

    Windows 2008 R2 (Datacenter)

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Fully Updated

RHEL 6 (Although I don't think this matters), running MS integration services 3.2

The BackupExec job fails with this error (but I'm guessing it is because at that time the machine is turned off and there's no saved state to backup). This same job, same settings run almost every time without any problems:

Backup- CYMHVN1 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\cymhvcl1.CYMDISTRIBUTORS.COM\Hyper-V?HA?VM\RedHat 6.0 Enterprise". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

V-79-10000-11230 - VSS Snapshot error. Unable to get minimum quiet time for physical volumes. Reduce the activity on these volumes, or wait and run the backup when there is less activity on the volumes.

Only events I'm seeing in order they occurr:

Volume Shadow Copy Error: VSS waited more than 40 seconds for all volumes to be flushed.  This caused volume \\?\Volume{e84ebdbe-0701-11e1-98d0-002655eba4d7}\ to timeout while waiting for the release-writes phase of shadow copy creation.  Trying again when disk activity is lower may solve this problem.

Volume Shadow Copy Warning: VSS spent 0x000000000000003c seconds trying to flush and hold the volume \\?\Volume{f4c25a22-7dab-11e0-af4e-806e6f6e6963}\.  This might cause problems when other volumes in the shadow-copy set timeout waiting for the release-writes phase, and it can cause the shadow-copy creation to fail.  Trying again when disk activity is lower may solve this problem.

  • We faced also some troubles using MS Integration Tools for Linux 3.2 in CentOS 6. Without knowing it exactly, whether this version causes your problem as well, I'd suggest either to wait for the next release or to make a try with a previous version of Integration Tools in the VM.

Besides can you see, whether your Backup jobs might run in parallel sometimes? It could clarify the error you get that it's not possible to create a snapshot, because the volume is "too" active.

    Regard,

    Hermann Maurer
