Remove command bar in explorer on windows 2008 server

    Question

  • Hi all,
    We're currently implementing terminal services with powerfuse, which seems to be working ok, but however, there is a major problem.

    I haven't managed to find any way to disable the "command bar" in explorer on the 2008 server, which means that non-privileged users are presented with shortcuts to the control panel, map network drives, add/remove programs and so forth. Disabling the functionality of these buttons isn't a problem, it can be done in GP, but isn't there a way to remove or hide  the command bar all together?

    regards

  • Hi,

    We've had the same problem and I've managed to fix it. Admitted, this isn't really something you would want to do, but hey, it works.

    Put the theme on classic.

    1. Download resource hacker (http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/)
    2. copy c:\windows\system32\shellstyle.dll to a location where you have write rights.
    3. copy shellstyle in the location where to copied shellstyle.dll to, to shellstyle-backup.dll
    4. Open shellstyle.dll with reshacker.exe.
    5. go to UIFILE --> 1 --> 1033
    6. press CTRL+F to find <style resid="FolderBandStyle">
    7. Insert the following line under <style resid="FolderBandStyle">
    <!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->

    <Element padding="rect(0rp,0rp,0rp,-32rp)"/>

    8. Click on compile script
    9. save the file (file --> save)
    10. Boot the server with a linux live CD. ( I recommend knoppix ). Windows won't allow you to overwrite shellstyle.dll in system32 even in safe mode. So you'll have to use something else. A bart PE CD would probably work too, but I used a knoppix cd.
    11. copy the modified shellstyle.dll to the c:\windows\system32\ folder
    12. reboot the server

  • Thanks for your help, Shanmugam!
    However, I'm not able to find the same keys in the registry for explorer that configures internet explorer.
    I'm still researching, so if there are any other tips, I'd appreciate it :)
