Adding print server role to existing Server 2008 R2 installs

    Question

  • We've got an existing 2008R2 server that is acting as our print server...but the "print server" role isn't installed.

A couple questions: if I install the role, will I need to reboot? And, if I install the role, will all the existing printers just come over?

We're a 24x7 shop, so "zero" downtime would be really nice...

  • Since you added a shared printer, you have performed the primary action that adding Print Server Role to the machine will perform.  I do suggest adding the Print Management tools but you can do this without adding the role.  Adding the role will not touch the printers.

    Elevated command window

    dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Printing-AdminTools-Collection

Adding the Role or just the tools does not require a reboot.

  • Thanks Alan; that worked perfectly! Now I can see "print server properties" and use the managememt features, without rebooting.

I appreciate the quick and accurate response!

  • You are welcome

Stopped by your town a few months back when I was headed to Dayton to visit friends and got my daughter some cupcakes.

  • Too funny! My wife and I dropped almost 90lbs combined a couple years ago, so we stay away from the bad-for-us stuff except for once in a great while.  Last September for my birthday, my wife and daughter decided a cupcake from Sweetest Thing was that once in a great while. :-) Good stuff...
