Can not add second node on a two nod setup

    Question

  • How do I get past this?

My second node setup is failing with the following error.

       1. A multi-node cluster can not be created becouse the quoran resource does not support adding nodes to the cluster.

       2. Error 0x800713de: The quorum disk could not be located by the cluster service.

All non-local disk on the second node shows as (Unknown Unreadable)

My config is two Dell R900 servers attached to a Dell MD3000 (SAS storage).

The storage is setup as basic formated as NTFS

    MS server 2003 64 bit

I have tried the Advanced button under select computers. And I have tried http://support.microsoft.com/?id=331801

The only differance I can find on the two servers config (other than server names and IP's) is the target disk location on server A is 26 and on the problem server is TID 6

The part of the error log where it seems to fail is attached below. I can attach the whole log from both server if needed.

  • You are using "Local Quorum", clearly detailed in the log sniplet you posted:

    so

    1) add either a disk or an MNS resource to the Cluster group

    2) right click on the cluster-name in cluster administrator, choose properties, goto the Quorum tab, and choose the resource created in step 1)

    3) click apply/close/yes until properties window is gone, right click on the Local Quorum resource in the Cluster group and delete

    done.

  • It is considered a best practice that the target on id of each LUN should exactly match between each node of the cluster.  You should change the TIDs to match, then try and readd the second node.

There are a few other little configuration gotcha's review this article for how to install MSCS to see what else you may have over looked.

  • The message, "A multi-node cluster can not be created because the quorum resource does not support adding nodes to the cluster" appears to indicate that the cluster you created is using a "Local Quorum" resource instead of a Physical Disk or a MNS quorum. You will need to correct the configuation of this cluster before it would allow you to add more nodes to the cluster.

    Hope this helps.
