Problems with mapping network drives over a VPN connection!

    Question

  • Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 with the file service role installed on the computer. It works fine when i am mapping a network drive with a copmuter on the same local network. But when i am trying to map a network drive over a VPN connection i get a error message, cant find network path. The remote desktop application works fine over the VPN connection. So maybe i have some problem with the firewall.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

    thanks

  • Have you tried mapping using the fully qualified domain name of the server hosting the share, ie, \\london.fabrikam.com\Sales instead of \\london\Sales? Check also the DNS settings of the computers when they are connected via VPN and ensure that the DNS server defined for this type of connection is reachable/contactable.

  • Hi,

I am using this path: \\192.168.2.1\Inetpub. When i type 192.168.2.1 in a web browser my default website is displayed.
So i think i have the correct path.

  • Can you ping/traceroute 192.168.2.1 when connected via VPN?

  • Yes that works fine. I have a website  on port 8080 and i can view the website on this adress 192.168.2.1:8080. So I do not think the problem is the VPN address, but maybe the problem is the firewall? I can map a network drive when i have my computer on the same LAN.

Thank you for the helping me.

  • Verify that port 8080 is not blocked by any firewall along your VPN connection.
