Installing WSUS on Windows Server 2008 R2...

    Question

  • Hi all;

    When installing WSUS role on Windows Server 2008 R2, at the end of installation (in Server Manager), the Server Manager connects to Internet to download something. My question is what is downloaded in this phase?

    Thanks

  • The phase before showing the WSUS Installation Wizard. So according to your answer, in that phase, the Server Manager is downloading WSUS application's bits?
    Yes. The WSUS installation bits are not resident in Windows Server 2008. When you select to install WSUS as a Role it first must download the installation bits from Microsoft, or a WSUS server that has the "WSUS3SP2 Dynamic Installer" update approved.

  • Consider I want to install a downstream WSUS server in this phase. How can I tell the Server Manager that it must use another WSUS to install WSUS-related bits?

    1. Configure the machine that will be the downstream WSUS server to be a client of the upstream WSUS server.

    2. On the upstream server create a special group for this downstream server and approve the updates for KB972493.

    3. Install the WSUS Role in accordance with the published Step-By-Step Guide. Because the machine is configured as a WSUS client, it will obtain the binaries for WSUS from the corporate WSUS Server, rather than Microsoft.

    Hard to say, you've not provided very much detail as to exactly where in the process you're interested. In fact, the process of installing WSUS initiates connections to the Internet several times:

    1. Downloading the program bits for the WSUS application.

    2. Synchronizing the initial catalog access to obtain products, classifications and languages.

    3. The performance of the initial synchronization.

    Perhaps reviewing the documentation will help to answer this question in more detail, depending on what step of the process you are actually interested in knowing about.
