Access issues across LAN with Windows 7. \\server\share wont work but IP does.

    Question

  • Hi all. I have a few new Win7 PC's for our dev team and they are having issues accessing Windows 2008 servers across a LAN by the share. They can remote into it fine and use the ip address ok as well.

So if they try \\server\share it wont work, \\192.168.1.10\share works fine. If they are on XP it works, Win7 doesnt.

Any ideas? If this needs to be moved to a different area let me know please.

  • - Can you ping the server by name from the windws 7 machines? this will confirm DNS is resolving correctly
    - Can you map to \\server\c$
    - What error do you get presented?

  • To build on Marc Russell's questions, try going to a command prompt and type nslookup servername (replace servername with the name of the server/machine you are trying to remote into)

It sounds like a DNS problem.....

If it errors out post the error back here.....
