Windows Update - Restart Later Option is greyed out

    Question

  • Hi,

We are pushing windows updates through WSUS to all our clients..but recently we are facing the issue as while updates installed the restart later option is greyed out..and the users are forced to restart which results in work loss. Mean while we haven't changed any settings in GPO or WSUS.

    Please help.

  • In your GPO you need to enable the No auto restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations policy.

Then, rather than us guessing as to what might be the cause, post the actual client configuration and we can tell you which option(s) are causing the undesirable behavior.

Export the registry key at HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

    and do the following:

    1. Record the system time.
    2. Restart the Windows Update service
    3. Post the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log starting at the time recorded in Step #1

  • Windows Update - Restart Later Option is greyed out.
*Is there any threshold to delay the Restart Later option? Which contributes to Restart Later greyed out?

Well, that would depend on the OS of the client system Anand. Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 systems behave differently with WSUS than other OS's. There are several threads here that describe in detail the differences. Here is one:

    Hope this helps.
