Duplicate cluster name

    Question

  • Hello,

our Exchange 2010 DAG Cluster is running fine.

    But when i type

    clustere.exe /list

    or

    [PS] Get-Cluster -Domain domain.example

i get the same DAG Cluster-Name double

    Clustername
    --------------
    EXDAG
    EXDAG

The DAG Group was reconfigured some times because of trouble issues some months ago.

In the clusternode registry and the active directory i only see one time the EXDAG name

Are there any ideas what happens here?

thanks in advance and regards Boris

  • Hi Robert,

yes i checked DNS (WINS is not running here). There's only one entry for exdag. also only one AD computer account

I checked also the registry entries of the DAG members. Below HKLM\Cluster there's only one clustername EXDAG

Also a reboot of both DAG members didn't solve it

  • HI,

did you also test this on the othernode and move the resources to the other node.

What version are you running (win2008r2 sp1 ?)

  • How many NICs does the Cluster Name has? appears that you got 2, right?

Confirm that and let me know.

  • Boris,

what does an nbtstat -r tell you do this on both nodes and is there a difference on the node that holds the cluster resource.

  • Ok can you give also the -n  this shows the local netbios names.

Are you sure i should turn it off?

  • yes you are right you can't disable this you have only one NIC.

here is more info : http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/02/13/what-is-a-microsoft-failover-cluster-virtual-adapter-anyway.aspx

what is your domain level It seams all fine, did you run the cluster vallidation report are there any errors ?

  • Hi Robert,

our domain level is "Windows Server 2003"

the cluster validation report reports no errors, only some warnings (only one NIC exists, no shared storage etc.)

  • Hi Boris,

you could do the powershell command.

    [PS] Get-Cluster -Domain domain.example

is there still two the same names ? can you show the full list

the basic is there is a duplicate serviceprincipalname (SPN) you can lookit up with adsiedit at your own risk !

adsiedit.msc go to the computeraccount exdag and go to the SPN do edit and there is the list if there is a value double or there is only a single line.

there are 2 lines host/name and host/name.FQDN and more is there a wrong line ?

what the powershell command does is looking in the AD for Clusters so my guess is that during the setup of the DAG there was some testing.

Or you could open a PSS case with microsoft they will lookin to it and resolve it for you ( you do the work on the server )

  • Hi Robert,

Get-Cluster -Domain domain.example shows still 2 times EXDAG

SPN of the AD-Object EXDAG shows

    HOST/EXDAG

    HOST/EXDAG.domain.example

    MSClusterVirtualServer/EXDAG

    MSClusterVirtualServer/EXDAG.domain.example

    MSServerCluster/EXDAG

    MSServerCluster/EXDAG.domain.example

    MSServerClusterMgmtAPI/EXDAG

    MSServerClusterMgmtAPI/EXDAG.domain.example

Are all of these these entries o.k.?

    best regards Borris

  • I get the same kind of duplicate entries when I run get-cluster -domain on my Exchange 2010 SP-1 DAG, but when I run it on a regular Failover Cluster host, I do not.  It must have something to do with having Exchange installed.
