Update not applicable for computer

    Question

  • I've been having issues with our backup software and there is a hotfix that needs to be installed but whenever I run it is says: The update is not applicable to your computer. Also, when I go into the event log and go to Windows Logs > Setup it says the following:

Windows update  could not be installed because of error 2149842967 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\Windows6.1-KB2182466-x64.msu"        ")

Any help with this issue would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  •   And what is the OS running on this machine? Is it a 64-bit OS? Perhaps you need the 32-bit version of the hotfix.

  • I think you are trying to install it on Windows 20008 R2 SP1 or Win 7 SP1, and this hotfix was probably included in SP1 (but please check that yourself).

  • Do as Bill Grant say. Also you can use check SUR Tool and check the log to find any useful information.

    System Update Readiness Tool
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

This tool will create a log file that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. The
log file is located at the following location:

    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Please also check if you can find KB2182466.log under the %windir% folder.

    Thanks

  • @Bill Grant: It is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit and I have the x64 bit installer on the computer.

@Krystian Zieja: Service Pack 1 is already installed but that hotfix is not on the sever.

@MyousufAli: I am about to try your suggestion now but I dont think that fix my problem though.

    Edit: The CheckSUR.log says:

  • Hi Andrew,

As I test,  this hotfix will prompt this error when your server not install windows server backup feature, please install the feature on your 2008 server.

    Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Additionally, you must have the Windows Server Backup feature installed.

  • @Rick Tan: Windows Server Backup is already installed on the system.  I think that the Hyper-V writer got removed in trying to fix something.  Do you know how to get that writer back?

  • Hi Rick,

I tried installing it but it says Update is not applicable to your computer.  Is that for Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2?

    P.S. I have Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Hi Andrew,

KB2009550 for windows 2008 R2, does your server have the symptom like KB tile VSS writer not list?

To patch the kb2182466, can you try to remove and add Windows Server Backup feature?

No VSS writers are listed when you run the “vssadmin list writers” command in Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Hi Andrew,

I find that KB 2182466 hotfix is included in Windows 2008 R2 SP1. Since Service Pack 1 has been installed, you couldn’t install it again.

What kind of backup issue are you encountering?
If you are using Windows backup, please post a new thread in the backup forum.

If you are using third-party backup, please contact your backup vendor.

  • Hi Rick, I checked the server again to see if that KB had been installed but it doesn't show it. Is that because it was installed with the Service Pack or is it not installed? Here is the updates portion of the Add/Remove Programs.

  • Hi Andrew,

In the list, it just show windows 2008 r2 sp1KB976932 installed. It's normal not show KB2182466 installed in the list. You could lookup detail hotfixes and updates in sp1 from below excel file. Another way, you could check Wbengine.exe and Blbsrv.dll file version which mentioned in KB2182466.

Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.xls

  • Oh okay, I think there is something wrong with the Hyper-V writer itself because it was listed again when i did a vssadmin list writers command but the backup failed after.  I re-registered the dlls again and the Hyper-V writer disappeared again.  I havent tested the backup again but I think it will work this time because its back to the settings that it had previously.
