boot failed. efi scsi device.

    Question

  • I used disk2vhd to create a vhdx from a machine running Server 2012 R2.  The boot (and only) drive for the machine is a 1TB mirror using an Adaptec RAID controller.  I created a Gen 2 VM on a WIndows 8.1 Pro machine, and attached the vhdx.  When I start the VM, the error message "Boot failed.  EFI SCSI device." is displayed.  How can I resolve this?

  • Did you try to use a generation 1 VM?

Was your machine that you converted a UEFI boot machine?  If not, it definitely will not run as a generation 2 VM.  The OS does not automatically handle the change from BIOS boot to UEFI boot.  And any conversion utility worth its salt should keep the original bootloader to not cause damage.

  • Thanks, I was interpreting the description of Gen 2 ("...support for features such as...SCSI boot...") incorrectly.  Gen 1 works fine.
