Migrate printers from 2003 (x86) to 2008R2 (x64)

    Question

  • I am trying to automate the task of migrating these printers.  I am trying to use the 2008R2 Print Management tool to backup the 2003 server, but it just fails and doesn't back anything up.  How do I perform this migration without having to reinstall each printer (I have about 120 printers!!)

  •  Hi,

Are you following the print migration guide:

Are you receiving any specific errors that we can help troubleshoot?

  • Yes, I am running the Print management tool, running  a backup to a file of the source server.

If I use the GUI, it says the Export Complete, "windows encountered errors during the migration process.  Click open event viewer to more information".  The event view does not report any errors or issues.

I have this happeneing in two different environments.

If I use the comand line utility, I get this error.

    The following error occurred: 0x80070043.
The network name cannot be found.

  • The printbrm events are in the application log

    C:\>winerror  0x43
        67 ERROR_BAD_NET_NAME <--> 0xc00000cc STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

Are you saving the file to the local disk.  Launch printbrm.exe using the -q option

    C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools>printbrm -q -s \\server
    Operation mode: query
    Target server: \\server
    Queue publish mode: none
    Overwrite mode: keep existing settings

You should get a list of the drivers and printers.

I assume you have installed the 64bit drivers onto the 32bit print server.
