    Question

  • We are trying to move from the microsoft public windows update to our internal wsus server. When we change our client computers over to the internal wsus server we get the following error on the working stations.

the wsus server shows the machine listed but says it has not reported a status.

this is were the errors seems to be from in the log.

This is your first challenge. WSUS does not execute on port 81.

A note of trivia... this Windows 7 Service Pack 1 machine has never been updated. Not from WSUS, nor from Windows Update.

  • IIS was changed to start wsus on port 81 and we can access it no problems on that port. I actually had this thing working several months back but did not have time to do the approve updates etc so I changed back to the default microsoft update server.

the reason I put it on port 81 was because we run vmware and port 80 has been taking by that. so i moved wsus over to port 81. I have disabled the vmware use of port 80 and change wsus back to port 80 and it did not matter still had the same error.

I hope I made sense here , If not let me know and I will explain more.

  • Correct , I re-imaged this machine to a clean windows image with no updates thinking that may have been the problem, but that did not fix anything.

I was thinking maybe a update from microsoft update broke it so I change it back to a base windows 7 image

This machine is my wsus test box before I apply the GPO to my entire network.

  • I built a new win2k8r2 server and added wsus to it with all defaults to rule out the port change.

getting same error number on the window 7 client boxes in my test group

This is a clean win2k8r2 install with wsus only and clients still getting this error. Have I missed a step? Any help at this point would be appreciated.

  • the reason I put it on port 81 was because we run vmware and port 80 has been taking by that. so i moved wsus over to port 81.

This is exactly why WSUS offers a pre-defined, alternate installation point to port 8530. I would suggest you uninstall WSUS and reinstall it, directly to port 8530, using the installer, so that you know that everything is configured correctly.

Historically, post-installation modifications made to IIS result in issues with functionality down the road.

But, you are correct, your server configuration has nothing to do with this particular client's failures.
