Error -1601 Windows Installer service could not be accessed

    Question

  • I have a Windows Server 2003 server that I'm getting the following error:

    Window Title-Feature Transfer Error

Error -1601 The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode, of if the Windows installer is not correctly installed.

Received this error when trying to update HP's Library and Tape Tools software. Tried to re-register, checked registry settings, etc. All looks good. Any ideas?

  • Hi,

The error messages usually appear after failed installation of MSI Package or Disabled "Windows Installer" service. Here are some suggestions:

    1. Try to re-register related files (though you mentioned it is performed)

    a. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.
    b. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
    c. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
    d. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

    2. Get a new version of Windows Installer:

    Windows Installer 4.5

    3. Check if the Windows Installer service is disabled on the machine

    4. If it is caused by incorrect installation, try this article:

  • Hello,

Are you using Safe Mode? If yes then this is the cause of the issue. Start your Windows using Normal startup and check results in this case.

Another possible cause is that Windows Installer is not correctly installed. To re-install, you can perform a repair install of your OS.
