System Volume Information Folder association without drive

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

Current environment is Server 2008 R2 server with shadow copies enabled for C:

C: Is also being backed up via DPM 2007 hosted on a remote server once a day.

I have noticed an increase use of disk space on the server and track it down to the system volume folder.

    vvsadmin shows the following associations:

    Shadow Copy Storage association
       For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{2217c31d-eea5-11e0-89cd-806e6f6e6963}\
       Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{2217c31d-eea5-11e0-89cd-806e6f6e69
    63}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 113.673 GB (48%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 114.699 GB (49%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 23.284 GB (9%)

    Shadow Copy Storage association
       For volume: (\\?\Volume{04d9cde2-05c0-11e1-8871-b499baa6abfa}\)\\?\Volume{04d
    9cde2-05c0-11e1-8871-b499baa6abfa}\
       Shadow Copy Storage volume: (\\?\Volume{04d9cde2-05c0-11e1-8871-b499baa6abfa}
    \)\\?\Volume{04d9cde2-05c0-11e1-8871-b499baa6abfa}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 18.419 GB (6%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 21.344 GB (7%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (100%)

The second association via the GUI is listed as disabled.

Any ideas why my C: association is using so much more space than it's maximum allocation?

And why does the second association not have a drive letter?  Without that how do I change it from UNBOUNDED to a % of disk space?

I'm pretty sure the two are related but don't know how to troubleshoot from here.

    Regards
