Convert Windows 2003 SP2 OEM to OLP license

    Question

  • Hi,

We have an old server which we want to virtualize.

The server runs Windows 2003 Standard Edition SP2 OEM.

My question now is how can we safely convert the OEM license to an OLP license?

I have read a lot of posts that indicate that the only way of achieving this is to repair the OS, via windows cd, and then enter a new license key. They however indicated that some installed programs might not work anymore. I have also read about the Microsoft VAMT tool but i doesn't specify anywhere that it can easily convert 2003 OEM to 2003 OLP.

What is the best way of doing this?

  • Hello,

install a new server with the key and use backups to restore the data or copy it with robocopy to the new installed machine. Most programs/servers have an option to backup and restore so check with the software vendors how to do it.

  • Hi,

Thank you for the quick response.

The problem is that we don't have a spare server on hand and we don't have enough diskspace left on our existing servers. Another problem is that there are many custom applications installed on the server. These applications would have to be reinstalled which would cost us a lot of time which we don't have...

Is there no way to just convert the existing OEM key to OLP ? I've heard that you can insert the windows 2003 cd, repair your install and  then enter a new license key. I have never tried this before so i don't know if it would work and a lot of people commented that it didn't work.

  • Hello,

keep in mind that using that articles may result in the loss of the server, so create an image/backup BEFORE trying it.

In your case use another machine(VM) and test the steps if you really will follow it.
