Unable to change administrator password on Server 2008 R2

    Question

  • I just took over on a project and am having issues with two servers.  Neither of the servers have been on the domain and it appears that neither has been logged into or configured.  When I attempt to log in to the server with the administrator account and a blank password I am prompted to change the password.  When I attempt to change the password with both complex passwords and simple passwords I receive an access denied error message.  Does anyone have any good suggestions on how I can resolve this issue?

  • Hello,

please post the complete error message you get, if possible a screen shot.

Assure to use a complex password with at least 8 characters and also to NOT contain anything from the account name.

  • "The user's password must be changed before logging on for the first time

    Options displayed:   OK Cancel

I press OK and am presented with: administrator Password New Password  Confirm Password

I leave the username field set to administrator

    The password field is blank

When I attempt to set the password I receive the following error message:

    Access is denied.

Sorry, I can't include a screen capture since I can't access the system.

  • Hi,

It seems like you want to change the Administrator password. If i misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

For Windows Server 2008R2, the built-in Administrator must have a password and the password must be changed at first logon. This will prevent the built-in Administrator account from having a blank password by default.

And the Password must meet complexity requirements, Please check this article:

Thanks for the assistance,  I was finally able to get into both servers and reset the administrator password on both boxes.
