Hyper-V performance better on Core than full install?

    Question

  • Hello,

we’ve got a Core installation on a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server on which I would like to run a number of virtual servers through Hyper-V. These can’t be managed direct on the 2900 – only remotely from a system running Virtual Machine Manager (I think) but we don’t have another system that meets the requirements to run VMM; we have a full 2008 install on a Dell GX620 but this doesn't support Hyper-V.

I have the option to install the full version of Server 2008 on the 2900 and run the VMs on that but assume there’ll be better performance sticking with the Core (apart from better security, learning, etc).

Given the limitations – we are a charity so don’t have the budget to just go and buy a machine that will run the manager for Hyper-V – is there an alternative for us to achieve what we want on Core or will I have to go for the full install?

    Many thanks,

    Michael
