An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging operation.

    Question

  • Hi

I have a Dell PE 2850 running Windows Server 2003 which is attached via SCSI to a Power Vault 220 SCSI disk enclosure.
The server is beeping and in the eventvwr I see the following message:

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging operation.

There are no disk failure lights on the server so what is causing these errors in the Event Viewer?

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

The error message you are viewing has occured due to paging . This event might have generated during swapping operation ( memory manager either swapped a page out of memory to your external disk or retrieved a page from your external disk )

So the article which joachim had posted 244780 is helpful and you need to analyze the CDB frame to understand if the issue had occured due to write operation or read.

  • Event 51:An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging operation.

Computer manager shows Disk0 as the System partition, is this the same thing?

    Thanks

  • The "error" doesn't have to mean that the disk is faulty, it's just that that specific write operation might have failed (for unknown reasons).

That's all the light I can shed on it after looking through my event logs, I have a few of those too, but no errors anywhere else.

Wrong. The word paging is misleading because this has nothing to do with memory paging. As Joachimg said, it is simply that a disk write failed for some reason. You can get this error on memory cards and flash drives as well which clearly have nothing to do with memory paging.
