New server 2012 primary domain controller

    Question

  • Hi,

After moving the FSMO roles over from our old SBS2003 server I demoted it in favour of Server 2012.  Since then I have a couple of strange issues seemingly related including 1 user can no longer access a Linus share with their domain credentials (this is for another forum maybe) and half the computers are missing from the network view.  Previously when browsing the network you could see the majority of machines including a number of file servers, however these are no longer visible.  I can access them by typing their address into the address bar without issue.  Unfortunately this is not an acceptable method for a large number of our users as they are used to using the network browse option.

Any obvious reason why these are no longer visible?

  • I assume that you've demoted SBS2003 and now there is only 1 Dc in the domain which is Server 2012. All FSMO roles held by 2012. If this is correct, then you have to correct DNS settings and Windows Time Server sttings and make Server 2012 as authoritative to domain. Once you change the settings using below links let us know if still have any issues.

  • Hi VenkatSP,

we now have 3 DC's, 2 with 2008rs and one with 2012 and the domain and forest functional levels are at 2003.  All the FSMO roles are indeed held by the 2012 server.  Unfortunately the link to the DNS best practice returns page not found error, do you have any other links?

  • Hello,

for starting please post an unedited ipconfig /all from ALL DC/DNS servers and a client with problems.

Additional you have to reconfigure the time service on the PDCEmulator according to: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/06/27/time-configuration-in-a-windows-domain.aspx

  • Did you run WINS on the old server and not on the newly promoted one?  Did you change the IP address on this new DC (And you are running WINS) but didn't change the clients to point them to the new WINS server?

FS1 and FS2 are our federation servers to connect to Office 365 SSO, I know that DC's should not be multi-homed or part of an NLB cluster but the secondary IP addresses do not register in DNS and I have turned off NETBIOS.

  • to pbbergs...

Yes, I hadn't realised the old sever was running WINS, I did not configure it on the new sever either.  However, DHCP is not set to add a WINS server IP address to any of the client machines and has not done for quite some time, about 2 years when I separated the DHCP role from the PDC.  Also once the new DC was promoted and passed the FSMO roles the IP address has not changed

  • Hello,

multi-homing and clustering from DCs is really bad practice. For a test remove both of them and if it then works you know what to change.

  • WINS provides the ability for clients to find other Windows machines that are not on the same sub-net.  If on the same sub-net they broadcast to find one another, it is a very chatty process.  DNS has no part of the browse capability.

  • all the machines are on the same subnet, we use 192.168.0.0/22.  But from what you are saying I need to have WINS running on a DC for machine browsing?.  It is still running on the demoted DC as I haven't switched it off yet.  I had read somewhere that NetBIOS names were a thing of the past and were not necessary in todays networks, presumably that was incorrect.
