WSUS 3.0 SP2 from SP1 upgrade failed with error 1722 CERT_SERVER_INSTALL

    Question

  • I have a standalone WSUS 3.0 SP1 installed on Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Internal DB, . Net 2.0. I've checked all the prerequisites and requirements.
My WSUS is not operational, please advise how to get WSUS either back to SP1 or forward to SP2.

This appears to be an old issue related to the PSFSIP installation; it would appear in this instance that the assembly that should be present (psfsip.dll) is not present, or it's not properly registered (and thus cannot be "found"), resulting in the failure of the installation of WSUS3SP2, following a successful uninstallation of WSUS3SP1.

The standard response to this scenario would be:
    1. Remediate the PSFSIP.DLL issue.
        a. Verify that the %windir%\system32\psfsip.dll file is present, if not restore it.
        b. Re-register the psfsip.dll file: Regsvr32 psfsip.dll

    2. Restore the previously existing WSUS3SP1 environment.

    3. Reattempt the upgrade to WSUS3SP2.

Do not attempt a direct installation of WSUS3SP2 at this point because the SUSDB database has not yet been 'converted' to the SP2 specifications. Attempting to install WSUS3SP2 onto a WSUS3SP1 database will result in the WSUS3SP2 refusing to connect to a non-compatible database and offering the as only option to create a *new* WSUS3SP2 database (resulting in the complete destruction of the original production database).

  • Lawrence,
I followed the instructions and restored the psfsip.dll V7.1.6001.65 and successfully registered the dll "DllRegisterServer in psfsip.dll succeeded". Then restored the WSUS3SP1 environment and started the WSUS30-KB972455-x86.exe install. Looks like I'm having the same error except this time the file still exist. Any other suggestions?

  • > Then restored the WSUS3SP1 environment

To what extent did you restore the WSUS3SP1 environment? Did you restore the System State? (Almost certainly required since the WSUS3SP2 would have cleared out the ~\Update Services\Server\Setup configuration registry key, as well as the %ProgramFiles%\Update Services folder tree.)

If so, you've likely overwritten the registry and deleted the registration for the PSFSIP.DLL that you previously corrected. I suppose there is a flaw in my instructions, as the ideal steps would be to re-register the DLL after restoring the WSUS3SP1 System State. I apologize for not forseeing that possibility.

  • When you said to restore the WSUS3SP1 environment, I did think of the System State but I decided not to do this because I have serveral other Network and Systems Management Tools installed on the same box, including a the Certification Authority Server. Therefore, I must uninstall WSUS and start over. Do you have any recommendations for doing this task or good links that can help me save my settings and/or SUSDB? BTW-Thanks for all your help.
