Site Replication Topology

    Question

  • I've got another question today as well this is mainly just best practice question.

What is the best way to setup site the site replication topology for a domain that has a fast link to all sites?  The automatic connections don't seem to work all that great, and so far I have manually added all remote site connections to the primary domain controller, so right now it looks like a hub and spoke configuration.  Any other suggestions?

    Hello,

It should be a good practice to create a custom site links as a hub and spoke configuration. However, please notice the performance of the primary domain controller that all remote sites connect to. With the growth the sites, the primary domain controller may experience a overload when it has too much replication partners. To avoid this, you may create a tiered Logical Site Design.

    Operation

    Service

    Performance impact

Replication with 1 to 10 partners

    Active Directory replication

    Low - Medium

    Replication with >10 partners

    Active Directory replication

    High

    PDC operations master

    Password change forwarding, logon forwarding

    High

KCC with less than 200 sites

    Compute replication topology

    Low - Medium

KCC with more than 200 sites

    Compute replication topology

    High
