DNS Suffix Change

    General discussion

  • Dear all,

we have india.abc.xyz zone with non AD dns in 10.223.0.0 IP pool, seperate physical DNS server in workgroup. we have "india" domain controller.

Now we have plan for migration to new seperate domain i.e APAC. In apac there is "apac.xyz" zone is a parant zone & we delegated as "asd.apac.xyz" in new IP pool 10.106.0.0 (this also non ad seperate DNS server in workgroup)

i have register some computer account using old zone(dns) & old IP  into new domain i.e apac.xyz (i have not register with asd.apac.xyz). FQDN of newly register computer is " 123.apac.xyz" after some i recongnize that it should be "123.asd.apac.xyz"

now i want change dns suffix as "asd.apac.xyz" for all regstered computer.

    please guide me.

  • Hello,

changing the domain name is either one way to go or using ADMT or similar tools to migrate to a domain using the correct name another one.

  • Hello,

if the domain name is now "apac.xyz" and should be "asd.apac.xyz" this cannot just be changed with the DNS suffix, either rename or migration to the domain with the correct name is required. Or did i misunderstand something here from your plan?

  • Hi sakulkarni007,

    Thanks for posting here.

Since both old and new DNS zone are non-AD integrated, so what do you mean register computer into these zones ? adding A records for these computers ?

If  I understand that properly we are attempting to migrate these records where in old DNS zone (india.abc.xyz) to new DNS zone (asd.apac.xyz) . Am I correct ?

If so , the utility DNSdump.CMD or DNSCMD may will help us to achieve that easily :

  • You need to provide more information.  Are you planning to join this computer to the new domain? If so, these computers will get the correct FQDN.

  • now i have set GPO as primary DNS suffix "asd.apac.xyz" & after reboot computer fqdn get changed as"win7.asd.apac.xyz"

But, after that error is " the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed " then  i change dNS hostname from "attribute editior" & user can login perfectly.  Now i have to change this setting manually  for every computer account.

to avoid this manual  work please suggest the best solution.

  • You don’t need to do anything manually if you are using a migration tool like ADMT.  I think you missed some migration steps.  Which process did you perform?
