I have windows 7 installed on my PC
and I have another HDD which I connect to my pc through USB
How can I install Windows 2008 R2 Server on the external HDD ?
I tried puttin' the Windows CD on my pc and chose to install it on the external Hard Disk's Drive but it gave me an error

First of all, CHeck if you system has the option (BOOT from USB) in BIOS supported.
If this is enabled. then you can boot your system from this USB drive and install WINDOWS on it.

Why not install VMware Workstation or Oracle VM VirtualBox on Windows 7 and create virtual machine that runs WS 2008 ? you can use external Hdd for storing .vmdk or .vdi files.

For Windows Server 2008 R2 on External Drive . Be in mind that [External Drive] USB stick are slower than disks and that performance will suffer. These methods are unsupported by Microsoft.
I recommended to refer deploying microsoft hyper-v server 2k8 r2 on External Drive
