  • Hi!

We had the same issue. Our clients had version 5.x.x.x of the wuauclt.exe. We upgraded our clients to version 7.x.x.x (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949104?p=1) and clients were able to contact and download updates from our WSUS 2.0 server.

    Also do this:

    1. Check the c:\windows\system32\wuauclt.exe version on a reporting computer
    2. Check the same file version on a non reporting computer.

Chances are the reporting computer version is 7.x and non reporting is 5.x

Please let us know if this works!

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Clint

    Thax for your reply.

As u said the problem is  incompatibility of client versions. I upgrade 2 pc's to version 7.X  and resolve my problem.
Now i have deployment problem of that update.
Is there any method to install that update remotely. (We are in a Domain envoirnment)

    Thax again

Upgrading the WSUS server to the latest version is the preferred resolution for such issues!

If you're clients are still running the v5.x WUAgent, then that means you're still using WSUS v2, which is now almost three years out of date (WSUS v3 was released in Spring, 2007, and WSUS v3 =SP2= was released six months ago.)

  • One of my clients had a similar issue and I can confirm that upgrading to version 7.x.x.x fixed the issue. How often does Microsoft update wuauclt.exe to a new major version?

  • How often does Microsoft update wuauclt.exe to a new major version?

Generally when a major revision of WU/MU and/or WSUS is released.

    The history goes like this:

    • v5.7 released with WSUS v2 beta (also installed by Win2003SP1)
    • v5.8 released with WSUS v2 gold
    • v7.0 released with WSUS v3 gold
    • v7.1 released with WSUS v3 SP1
    • v7.2 released Summer 2008 to repair some critical issues in the v7.1 agent
    • v7.3 released with Win7/Win2008R2 (this version was never supported by WSUS/WU/MU/AU)
    • v7.4 released with WSUS v3 SP2
