Encarta 2008 - Encarta for Kids

    Pregunta

  • Hi all,

We have had two HP Multi-seat thin client systems installed this month in our school. Each has six clients connected. OS is Windows Multipoint Server 2011. I am trying to get Encarta 2008 in particular the Encarta for Kids to run. Installation didn't cause any problems. I took the option to copy the contents of the DVD to the hard drive. Sometimes Encarta for Kids will run on a few of the clients but often it starts to load the application and hangs. Are there any particular configurations that need to be configured. It could hardly be the case that one of Microsoft's own product is incompatible.

  • Hi,

it´s same as I wrote you in another post with PhotoStory. Encarta is discontinued for a long time. You can only try to run it in compatibility mode.

  • Are you able to see in event viewer why it's crashing?

Sometimes.. sometimes only... software doesn't run well under standard user. I had this problem and what I did for another software was to allow read/write for all user in its folder and on its registry keys. I will be really not surprised that I won't work with you but you can try!

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have used adding read/write permissions many times for running software on XP Pc's in the school domain. I don't see this as a solution at present because software won't run successfully logged in as domain administrator. I have tried suggestion of the event viewer. I have not much experience of using the event viewer logs but I have copied and pasted here:

Someone here may be in a position to throw some light on the above.

Sometimes I get a message onscreen Microsoft Encarta has stopped working with an offer to Check online for a solutionj and close the program or Close the Program.

Windows will go off to check for a solution but does't return any solutions and closes program. If I try again, software attempts to run butb no errors reported onscreen and doesn't fully load.

  • BEX refers to buffer execution overflow: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738483%28WS.10%29.aspx

you can try to disable DEP for encarta:

    right click on my computer
    go to properties
    click on advanced system settings
    under performance, click settings
click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
click Add, browse to the executable file for the program and add it.

In my case this worked for maxima...
