Windows server 2008 R2 Standard Server role limitations

    Pregunta

  • how to install an Active Directory and TFS in a single server? is it possible to run these in the same machine simultaneously? we have bought a Server 2008 R2 Standard edition. Is there a limitation of installing server roles in Standard edition? can I install more server roles even if I have install the Hyper-V role?

  • Hi,

The limitation of Standard edition is that it doesnot support clustering, also it has less support for RAM and CPU as compared to other editions.

It is not recommended to have any other role running along with Active Directory or Hyper-V role.

You should be abe to install AD ans TFS on the single server.

  • Hi!

There is no technical limit preventing you to install multiple roles on a Windows Server. It is however recommended to run the Hyper-V role alone at the physical computer. You can then install virtual machines that host the various server roles you need. This best-practice is related to performance and facilitate for support in the future.

Its recommended to install at least one Active Directory DC on a dedicated physical server, but in smaller environments the need for this may vary.

With the Standard edfition license, you are entitled to running one Standard server as a virtual machine using the same license key as the host, assuming you run nothing but Hyper-V in the parent partition.

  • Hello,

There is no limitations for installing server roles and/or features.

Do you want to install AD and TFS on a production environments?

For the best practice in production , leaving an AD Role on a single server is more important. But for general speaking you can install.

    But it is not recommended.

Also it depends how many users you will have in your domain controller?

    Sincerely,

    Murat Demirkiran
