Windows update agent 7.6.7600.256 fails to install. Error 8007041B. WSUS server running KB2720211.

    Pertanyaan

  • On 6/10/2012, KB2720211 was installed automatically on our WSUS server which is running on Server 2008 Enterprise Edition SP2 x86.

Around that time, WSUS clients were prompted to install new Windows update software but when attempting to do so, it fails every time.

Upon checking the update history, it appears that it was trying to install 7.6.7600.256 and has the error 8007041B.

Since it is unable to install, clients are unable to check for updates through the WSUS server and can only check via Microsoft update.

Even though there is no official standalone installer from Microsoft, I found this installer that someone packaged: http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/9907-repak-windows-update-agent-767600256/

I installed it on a client and rebooted and it did update the agent to the latest version and they were able to check for updates through WSUS again.  Since this isn't an official Microsoft solution and it would not be very efficient to deploy to lots of clients, does anyone have any idea why it keeps failing?

Here is the log on a client that attempts to install the agent:

  • Here is where I found the standalone: http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/9907-repak-windows-update-agent-7676002567/

I actually found a solution for our issue.  We run Cisco NAC on all of our computers.  By stopping the NAC service (net stop nacagent), I was able to install the latest Windows update agent, then restart the NAC service (net start nacagent) and the computers are able to once again download and install updates from our WSUS server.

  • I still  blow up with slightly different error messages.

Thanks for this help, I'll try to take it from here and find out what else has me.

Looks to me like a corrupted Windows Update Agent installation.

Since this is a Win7SP1 system, the WUAgent v7.5 is only available from the Win7SP1 distribution. I do not know whether re-applying SP1 will rollback the WUAgent -- I suspect it won't. There are no standalone installers for v7.5 or for this v7.6. I also know that you cannot install the WUAgent v7.4 on a Win7Sp1 system.

BUT! there IS a standalone installer for an earlier build of the v7.6 agent that was designed to fix a specific flaw in the v7.5 WUAgent. It can be obtained from download links in KB2607070. I would suggest downloading that installer, running it with the /wuforce switch -- which should give you a repaired installation of an official Microsoft distribution of a supported WUAgent for this Windows 7 SP1 system.

And then, after installing KB2720211 to your WSUS server, allow this system to scan the updated WSUS server -- or use the Control Panel | Windows Update applet to scan WU/MU, which will also update the older v7.6 WUAgent to the current v7.6.7600.256 WUAgent.

  • @ G0zen: that standalone installer did the trick! used the /uninstall via command line and was able to uninstall the newest version!

  • Can you detail what you did and what installer you used? I am having the same issue and need to get rid of  v7.6.7600.256 WUAgent

all328, you need to download the unofficial WUA 7.6.7600.256 setup package from Wincert.net.

run the unofficial WUA 7.6.7600.256 EXE file (either the WindowsUpdateAgent-MicrosoftUpdateClient30-x86.exe or WindowsUpdateAgent-MicrosoftUpdateClient30-x64.exe file) with the /q and /uninstall switches and reboot.  I assume you're using Windows Server 2008 as the uninstall switch only works on Vista/2008/Seven.

not sure why Microsoft hasn't yet provided standalone WUA 7.6.7600.256 setup packages.  they would have eased some of our troubles when updating/installing WUA 7.6.7600.256.
