Server 2008 R2 Desktop Experience Icons Won't Move

    Domanda

  • Using the guide here http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/win2008r2/tag/desktop-experience I am running server 2008 R2 on a laptop using the desktop experience. I do this so I can use Hyper-V for demo environments. Something funny is happening with my desktop icons. They seem to be frozen in place. I cannot drag them around on the desktop at all. I can't even drag something to the recycle bin from the desktop. Anyone know what policy or something else that would lock this down? I need to be able to move them around.

  • Corrupt user profile might cause such issues as I had seen those before.

I could fix the issue by recreating the affected profile.

Here's what I had done before.

Log on with local admin account.

Rename the affected user profile to say user.old (don't forget to backup favorites and anything important)

Log on again with the desired user and restore backed up data.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

After search I found related issue happened on Windows 7, Windows Vista or even Windows XP.

So I think this is not a version issue which just happens on Windows Server 2008R2, but a common issue happens on Windows System.

As “Santosh Bhandarkar” mentioned above, you may try to create a new user profile and check the result.

Also from other threads, partners suggest disable all startup items to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.

    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).

    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Restart laptop and test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
