Win7 PCs failing whereas WinXP ones succeed...

    Domanda

  • We have about a half dozen PCs refusing to update our WSUS server or to download and install any updates. At the site we have a few WinXP PCs and they are fine. The only ones failing run Win7. This is a small site which we do not have a VPN to and as such we have them pointed to our wsusserver.company.com URL on a public IP. The site has a fairly slow DSL internet connection which I'd be quick to think is the culprit, except for the consistent success on the WinXP PCs.

We've searched and read many discussions about similar problems both here and elsewhere. We've tried the various prescribed resolutions without success.

The server runs Win2008 standard SP2 with WSUS 3.2.7600.226 and KB2720211 is installed. The PCs all show up in the WSUS console, properly for the WinXP ones, "Not yet reported" for the Win7 ones.

We have other WinXP and Win7 PCs at other locations also on DSL and similar internet connections communicating with the same WSUS server without issue. Only PCs in one physical location and only Win7 ones there.

Since an entire log file is too large to post here apparently, here are what I think are some of the highlights:

  • FYI, this was resolved by replacing the router that connected this office to the internet. A Cisco 877 connected to Bellsouth/AT&T DSL service. A different brand/model was used simply because we don't want to support that model any longer. Other 877's in service at other locations with basically identical configurations are still fine. So odd as it may seem, we're left with the conclusion that it was something "broke" about that router.

    Thanks

  • The server runs Win2008 standard SP2 with WSUS 3.2.7600.226 and KB2720211 is installed.

This statement is inconsistent. KB2720211 changes the version number of WSUS, but you'll only notice that if you get the version number from the correct place -- from the WSUS Console details pane, not from the MMC About->Help dialog, which has a long-standing bug regarding this information. The correct version number when KB2720211 is installed is 3.2.7600.251.

This is a well-known error condition, and almost always caused by duplicated SusClientIDs, which is, in turn, caused by cloning systems from improperly prepared master images. Are these Win7 systems cloned from the same master image?

2012-11-19 14:27:06:5231016 1388PT WARNING:     Message:Server rolled back since last call to GetCookie

This message is indicative that the information stored in the WSUS server does not match the information last uploaded by this particular client -- most likely because another client, using the same SusClientID, has uploaded different information. The client thinks that the server has been changed (e.g. rolled back). In this respect, the client is a bit stupid.

This is a TIMEOUT error .. which is interesting in the context, but could also be a manifestation of the SusClientID issue (although I don't recall having seen TIMEOUT errors manifest in this scenario previously).

Once you fix the 0x8024400D/0x80244015 errors, we can revisit these TIMEOUT errors if they continue to exist.

They could, in fact, be caused by a slow connection (and certain other conditions present on the WSUS server).

  • If we do Help / About Update Services the version string shown is 3.2.7600.226

If we look in Server Manager we see 3.2.7600.251

So it sounds like the KB is installed and we're experiencing the "version number bug" you described?

These systems weren't cloned as far as I know. And even if they had been, our standard initial WSUS setup includes "wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow". And that has been ran on all PCs a number of times recently as well. That should cause the PC to generate a new SusClientID shouldn't it?

So that appears to leave the timeout... The site's DSL is not super fast but should really be adequate. We have recently noticed that scp'ing a file to a Linux server there goes pretty much as fast as their allocated bandwidth. Any form of file copy to one of their windows PCs is considerably slower though. We're looking at some other things now, MTU, etc..

    Thanks.

You need to install KB2734608 on WSUS and on each computer, where is
WSUS Console installed. Then the Version is Build 3.2.7600.256.

AFAIK no, you have to use Methode 1:

In this case, KB2734608 is not required. If KB2720211 is already installed (which it is, as evidenced by the '251' build number), then KB2734608 is only required *IF* the WSUS v3 server will be used to patch Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 systems. My recommendation is to defer installing KB2734608 until it is needed. (The odds are equally good that a WSUS v6 server will be installed, or that a WSUS v4 (or v7) release will come around before many organizations ever deploy a Win8 or Win2012 system.)

Is this system cloned from another system? This partial error is consistent with a client that has a duplicate SusClientID. See KB903262.

  • They were not cloned to the best of my knowledge. But even if they had been, our setup procedure for joining to a WSUS server involves (among other things):

    REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f

    and

    wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

Which I've confirmed results in a new value in that key afterwards.

    Thanks.

    Thanks
