Best practices for configure logical network in cluster with one NIC

    Întrebare

  • Hi guys! I have problem with organization logical network in Hyper-V cluster + SCVMM. I have one physical NIC for organization access to network my VM's and managment Hyper-v host. My VM's and host will be use few VLAN ID (10 managment hyperv hosts, 11 intranet, 12 intranet). My cisco had been configured for trunk port.
I can make few virtual adapter (VLAN for managment and VM's) by driver NIC and create few virtual switch (without "Allow management operating ...") in managment console Hyper-V and use this virtual network for connect VM's. But I can create one virtual switch with "Allow management operating ..." and configure  trunk port for physical NIC in SCVMM with logical network and add VLAN ID to it.

What is best practices for my situation???

  • Robert thanks for your reply. I understand how many NIC i need but i have BladeSystem and each node has 2 NIC. One NIC has been used for Cluster and LiveMigration.
I want to understand how to organize a managment network on a separate VLAN (create by HP drivers) or using checkbox "Allow management operating ...". What is best practices for my situation???

  • HI,

It depends on your enviroment there is no best way or wrong way YOu have only 1 nic and want to divide this in chops for traphic control, but the more one vlan needs the other gets less. good to see that the CL & LM is on a dedicated nic.

I think what I shoud do is leave it as it is one nic CL + LM and the other nic as domain traphic .in the hyper -v Server.

in the VM's you could make usage of the vlan's on the domain nic then create vlan in the VM settings off the nic.

The live migration is only talking to the other Hyper-v servers and more speed is better.

you can create so many vlans and nic usage but keep in mind when you need to troubleshoot one day simplify is king and performance is what you want
