Upgrading DC controller from server 2008 standard to enterpise

คำตอบ

  • Hello,

Such In-place upgrade is supported. However, it is not recommended to proceed like that for a DC. Details about in-place upgrade: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

For that, I would recommend proceed like the following:

    • Make sure that each DC is a DNS and GC server
    • Make sure that there no AD replication issues using dcdiag and repadmin
    • Choose a DC and demote it. Before doing it, you have to move its FSMO roles to another DC if it is an FSMO holder
    • Re-install the OS of the old DC so that it will use Enterprise Edition
    • Promote again the DC and make it a DNS and GC server
    • Do the same for the second one

That is the most recommended way in your case.

Please note that Standard edition is enough for DCs. If you are planning to use applications / clustering on them then this is not recommended.

  • Hi,

For which reasons do you need to upgrade your Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition ?

  • Hello Mr X,

there is a typo in DCDIAG the "G" is missing. And you mixed replication and healthcheck, for replication is used "repadmin" instead or new ADREPLSTATUS http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30005

For the rest i agree of course with Mr X. I prefer also new installs instead of in-place upgrades on DCs.

    Thank You Meinolf,

I updated my reply. And yes, it would be better to use dcdiag and repadmin to check both replication and health.

    Thank You very much :)
