PING: transmit failed. General failure

    Soru

  • server 2008 r2 X64

The server lost network access. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but any other ip address on the network and I get a PING: transmit failed. General failure. If I uninstall the nic cards and reinstall them they are assigned random ip info and I can get to the internet but no network resources. The sever is multihomed but I have disabled the 2nd nic and still have problems. Any ideas?

  • I'd remove the roles you're not using and disable all but one network interface until you get it sorted.

  • Hi Ptex,

    Thanks for posting here.

So it seems we have installed several roles on this multihued domain controller , am I right ? so do we have any other role installed  instead NLB ,Active Directory and Hyper-V ?

First all, it is not suggest to install any other role on a Hyper-V server and is also not suggest to have a multihomed domain controller .

Perhaps you can tell us what are we going to achieve with this multihomed server host so that we can provide the solution for you to set these up in proper way with following our best practices.

  • So the first issue mentioned is resolved? What is meant by assigned random ip info ? Is hyper-V involved?

  • I uninstalled Hyper v and just reinstalled it and it seems to be fixed. I dont use hyper v on that server?

  • Well then I don't understand why you're installing hyper-V role.

  • Hi Ptex,

    Thanks for posting here.

It seems we might not properly set virtual NIC in Hyper-V. May I know how did we configured that ? and what type of virtual NIC did we assign to use ? please also show us the ipconfig /all result form this server after Hyper-V has been installed .

Meanwhile, I agree with Dave that it is no necessary to install Hyper-V rule if we are not plan to use it .

  • Im getting the same error. Im now trying to remove hyper v again and get " removal failed hyper v role no mapping between account names"

Ok I was able to remove the hyper v role. Can I remove the domain controller role? I still need the server to be part of the domain just not a DC because it needs to have multihomed nics.

  • And I lost all access again. So I reinstalled hyper v thinking that would fix the issue and it did not. I can ping it but when I try and ping from it I still get "PING: transmit failed. General failure" .

  • I don't know if this has any thing to do with hyper v. Hyper v is not being used on this server, the role is just installed. Hyper v is not needed on this server I don't think print sharing is either but that role is also installed.

  • Another strange thing is I can remote into it?

  • I've done the following:

    1. flushed the dns cache

    2. disabled and enabled the device

    3. uninstalled and reinstalled the network drivers

    4. netsh int ip reset

I can ping 127.0.0.1, but nothing else.

  • Hi

    not necessary,

Have you try to enable just 1 NIC ? I see multiple NIC's on your server. It doesn't ping the "10.0.0.5" address ?

try to add this adress to another NIC wich is connect on your switch

  • Hi!  I'm seeing a similar problem.

    Got: Server 2008R2-sp1 x64

    Active Directory is NOT running.

I have already uninstalled Hyper-V as it was mentioned as a possible problem.

I was setting this up to be a stand-alone WDS o/s deployment server which is why AD and so much is turned off.  Also, I only have the "transport" service running under WDS...

Everything was working fine till the other day when I let a wizard "change" some of the network stuff.

Now I have the same problem with ping.  "PING: transmit failed.  General failure."  I am lost... My server is at 198.162.16.4 and I just try "ping 198.162.16.4"

The odd thing is - I know the network is sound as I can still PXE-boot workstations.  They just can't "ping" once WinPE is up and running.

This puts severe restraints on how I can deploy images to my workstations.

  • same problem, on IBM 346 server with Windows Server 2008 R2.  There is no Hyper V installed on this machine, actually the only role installed is IIS since this is going to be an Exchange server if we ever finish building it.  Yesterday we got an IP address assigned to it via DHCP, today that IP address was gone, now we can't get a new IP, and when we try to ping itself with localhost or the 169 private address it has we get the dreaded error

    PING Transmit failed. General failure.
