  • HI,

These updates are all security update for the .NET Framework, but these updates are not needed for all computers.

    KB2604111 applies to the following:

    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 when it is used with:
      • Windows Vista Service Pack 2
      • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
      • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

    KB2604110 applies to the following:

    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 when it is used with:
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
      • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3

    KB2604092 applies to the following:

    • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 when it is used with:
      • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

They are all apply to Windows XP Server Pack 3 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack2, so they are compatible with computers which run Windows XP Server Pack 3 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack2. But they are not needed if these computers don’t have related .NET Framework installed.

  • thanks, but what I am asking is why an approved and "compatible" update still have the status not installed ?
    12 Haziran 2012 Salı 08:57
  • Hi,

In computer report, needed update will show status Not Installed.

    Update status definition of Needed:

When it refers to the status of one computer, Needed means that the update is compatible with (and should be installed on) the computer. When it refers to the status for a computer group, the Needed column displays the number of computers in the group to which the update is applicable. A positive Needed result means that the update is applicable, but it was not installed the last time that client computers contacted the WSUS server. Any of the following can be true when the status for an update is Needed:

    • You have approved the update for installation but the client computers have not contacted the WSUS server since you approved it.
    • The update has already been downloaded and installed, but the client computer has not contacted the WSUS server since the update was installed.
    • The update has already been downloaded and installed, but the client computer must be restarted before changes go into effect. The client computer has not been restarted.
    • The update has been downloaded to the computer but has not been installed.
    • The update has not been downloaded or installed on the computer.

This is definition of Needed in WSUS 3.0 but in WSUS 2.0 it also mentioned “You have not yet approved the update for installation, although the Detect only action has been performed” Although this sentence has been removed from WSUS 3.0 document, but truth is it Needed status also include “Not Approved” updates.

So is an update status is Needed or Not installed, that means that update is compatible with the computer, but maybe not really needed for the computer.

  • Ok understood, but what does not installed mean, if i have approved the update and its already installed on other machines, but on a few machines i have the status not installed ! not downloaded or failed .

What does this mean, and how can i solve it ?

    13 Haziran 2012 Çarşamba 11:08
  • Hi,

Needed but not installed software will be consider as not installed software in WSUS report.

But just I mentioned above, needed means the update is compliant with the computer, it’s available for the computer. Just like the three updates you mentioned, they are all compliant with Windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 system, so they are all needed for these system. But these updates has their own installation requirement (different .net framework version), computer don’t have relevant .net installed can’t install these updates.

Needed software is not really necessary for a computer.

    > if i have approved the update and its already installed on other machines, but on a few machines i have
    > the status not installed ! not downloaded or failed .

If an update is needed and its installation requirement is meet, but update not installed. Run “wuauclt.exe /detectnow” on the client computer to force it connect WSUS immediately, check available update and install it.
