    Hello,

I just finished a SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 Migration and for the most part was successful. All mailboxes, public folders, send / receive connector etc. are on the 2008 Server and working properly. My issue of course is that the First Exchange Site from the source server was never removed from AD because I ran DCPROMO on the source server before attempting to uninstall Exchange from the source server. Stuff happens. I want to clean up Active Directory and make sure the SBS 2008 new accounts wizard tries to create mailboxes on the new server.

The Good News: I am confident that everything important has indeed been moved from the source server over to the SBS2008 server. It was one of the final steps of the migration I did out of order. The source server has been off for two weeks and aside from some errors in the event viewer, mail flow, public folders and offline address book seem to be working correctly.

    More Info:

Running the Get-ExchangeServer commandlet shows the source and destination servers still.
In ADSIEDIT I can see both the SBS 2008 (Exchange Administrative Group FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) along with the source Administrative Group (first administrative group)
I was able to remove the routing connector with the Remove-RoutingGroupConnector commandlet.

Can I just remove the "CN=first administrative group" ADSIEDIT? What all do I need to remove without stepping on my working 2007 Exchange setup?

    Thanks,
    -Chad

You would be better off posting this question in the SBS 2008 News Group. The general rule for SBS is: If there is an SBS way of doing things (mostly wizards), don't do it the way a highly knowledgeable Enterprise specialist would have done it. There is so much going on behind the scenes with wizardised SBS administration and so many dependencies. The confusing part is when to do things the SBS way and when to do things the usual  way.

Personally I would guess that you could delete the first administrative group, but don't take my word for it. You will find extremely knowledgeable and helpful MVPs and other participants here, including the SBS Diva and Jeff Middleton (SBS Migration).

And as a side note: If you need to do migrate other SBS installations, I still think this is the best method:

    Hi SDS_CODER,

Were you able to get a solution to your question. I have the exact same issue with my SBS 2008 migration and have not been able to find a resolution to the problem.

    Hi Jamdown,

Sorry for the late reply but since this is probably showing up in searches I will let you know how I got it sorted out. Running the SBS 2008 best practices analyzer along with the Exchange 2007 best practices analyzer really helped resolve the issue so run those and try and resolve any issues. I had DNS issues and some other stuff going on because of my misstep in the migration. Finally after removing the source server completely from AD users and computers the new account wizard creates accounts and e-mail accounts correctly.

Granted, I still have an orphaned Exchange 2003 site but the connectors to it are all gone so basically it is just sitting there. I asked on a few forums / newsgroups including this one if it was safe to just GPEDIT the old one out but never got a clear answer and it doesn't appear to be affecting anything so I left it in.

Migrating SBS 2003 to 2008 may not even be worth it for smaller shops. If I had to do a 10-15 user shop over again I would probably just EXMERGE out the mail, recreate the accounts by hand and move the data over. One wrong turn in that giant migration document and chaos follows. Just my opinion...
