Virtual Other System

Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct forum for my question but couldn't find a more appropriate one.
Is it possible to have another operating system installed on a second hard disk and run it in virtual mode on Windows 7 professional. For example, can I install Linux on a second hard disk and be able to switch from Windows 7 to Linux without having to shutdown Windows 7 and boot up Linux and then vice versa?
Thanks in advance
Alanjo

No. VPC does not boot an OS from a physical hard drive. It runs from a virtual hard drive which is simply a file as far as the Windows file system is concerned. You can certainly store this file on a a different hard drive from the host OS if you want.
You can run the vm without shutting down the host OS. In fact the host OS must be running because VPC is an application running under the host OS.

You can do this, but maybe not exactly the way you think. Most any virtualization program allows you to run another OS, a guest OS. One OS is the host OS and is boot up. You can then install other OSes in the virtualization program which allows you to run another OS concurrently with the host OS. Keep in mind that the guest OS does not run directly on the hardware but instead runs on emulated and virtualized hardware. So, you could boot Windows 7, install a VM program and a Linux OS as a guest, and then you would be able to run Linux or another instance of Windows at the same time.

Hi,
I am sorry to say this feature cannot be achieved. You may need to create Virtual Machine.
For reference:

Hello,
Thank you all for your replies. These are all helpful and clarify my understanding of how all this works. I will attempt to set up a virtual guest operating system either using VPC or VirtualBox from Sun Oracle.
Thanks again
