In order to add a longhorn server to an existing 2003 forest how does one run adprep /forestprep on a 2003 domain controller for dcpromo to complete on the longhorn server?

Following is extract from Longhorn Technical Library:

To prepare the forest schema for Windows Server "Longhorn"

     1.  Log on to the schema master as a member of the Enterprise Admins, Schema Admins, and Domain Admins groups.

    2.  Insert the Windows Server "Longhorn" DVD into the CD or DVD drive. Copy the contents of the \sources\adprep folder to an Adprep folder on the schema master.

    3.  Open a command prompt, and then change directories to the Adprep folder.

    4.  At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    adprep /forestprep

    5.  Allow the operation to complete, and then allow the changes to replicate before performing the next procedure.

To prepare a Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 domain for Windows Server "Longhorn"

    1.  Identify the domain infrastructure operations master role holder as follows:
    • In Active Directory Users and Computers, right-click the domain object, click Operations Masters, and then click Infrastructure.

    2.  Log on to the infrastructure master as a member of the Domain Admins group.

    3.  Insert the Windows Server "Longhorn" DVD into the CD or DVD drive. Copy the contents of the \sources\adprep folder to an Adprep folder on the infrastructure master.

    4.  Open a command prompt, and then change directories to the Adprep folder

    5.  If this domain controller is the first Windows Server "Longhorn" domain controller in a Windows 2000 Server domain, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    adprep /domainprep /gpprep

    6.  If this domain controller is the first Windows Server "Longhorn" domain controller in a Windows Server 2003 domain, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    adprep /domainprep

If you prepare a Windows Server 2003 domain by running adprep /domainprep /gpprep, you can safely disregard the error that indicates that domain updates were not necessary.

    7.  Allow the operation to complete, and then allow the changes to replicate before performing the next procedure.

I tried the same procedures, but was told that the process could not continue because the DNS Server in the W2K3 forest did not support dynamic updates, even though Secure Only is selected in the DNS Server's properties. There must be something else going on.....

    Good day,

Can someone give me some info (preferably here and a white paper) on joing Longhorn (beta 3) to an existing 2003 forest? Offcourse you have the steps as mentioned above but are these also nessescary if you don't want the Longhorn Server to be a domain controller? And is there a document which describes the changes to the schema?

[edit] I already found some usefull information at: http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/ but still all information is welcome. [/edit]

    Yours sincerely,

    Peter V

    Hi Arbeider,

Schema changes using adprep command is only required if you want to add Longhorn server as domain controller to existing pre-longhorn forest. You can join Longhorn member server to existing Windows Server 2000/2003 forest as per normal (Go to System Properties, computer name tab, click on Change), no changes to schema is required.

    Hi BucFanz,

You might want to verify whether the Longhorn server's network interface is configured to use correct DNS server and join it as member server to the forest first before you run dcpromo to promote it as domain controller.

    Jalabert and everyone concerned,

I agree 100 % with acchong's post. Also make certain that you raise the domain function level to Windows 2003 native mode and allow time for replication.

    Associated TechNet article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692/en-us?spid=3198&sid=1493

    Hope this helps,

Thanks Acchong !! I had the same problem but I overcame it with adding the server to the domain prior to running the DCPROMO.

Do you run these steps before running DCpromo or after?

In other words do I first join the 2008 server to the domain, then run DCPROMO, then run the adprep?

    Thanks

    Hello Debomack,

Acchong stated that, "Schema changes using adprep command is only required if you want to add Longhorn server as domain controller to existing pre-longhorn forest. You can join Longhorn member server to existing Windows Server 2000/2003 forest as per normal (Go to System Properties, computer name tab, click on Change), no changes to schema is required."

Thus if you are adding the 2008 server as a domain controller to a pre-2008 forest you prep first then promote. Otherwise, "(Go to System Properties, computer name tab, click on Change), no changes to schema is required."

    Hope this Helps,

I can NOT run the adprep because my 2003R2 server is 32bits but the "Longhorn" I've installed in another 64bits machine is 64 bits.

When I try to do this adprep in my 2003R2 server, it wasn't allowed me to do because the \source\adprep I'm getting is from the 64bits version of "Longhorn". On the other hand, I also can NOT run the adprep on my "Longhorn" 64 bits machine because this machine hasn't become the Domain Controller.

How can I solve this problem?? Any where I can find a 32bit version of adprep??

    Thanks a lot!

You can get 32bit version of ADprep from 32bit version of Windows Server 2008 setup DVD which can be download from following link:

    Please I need ADprep for 32bit in order to join Win2003 R2 Entrep 64bits SP2 to a Domain Win2003 Std 32bits SP1.

    Best Regards

You can download evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 R2, then copy out the Adprep folder from second CD.

Adprep folder can be found in following location of 2nd CD: CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP

Go to following link to download evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 R2:

Content of adprep folder for both version of CD should be the same.

Anway, since your domain controller is running Std 32 bits of OS, why not just download Std 32 bits.
