I'm getting this error when attempting to start my virtual machine on Server 2008. I have checked and re-checked everything in BIOS, evrything looks good.

"An error occurred while attempting to change the state of teh virtual machine. The virtual machine could not be started because hypervisor is not running."

    Any ideas?

    Cheers!

Did you enable these setting on your machine

    1.     Under Security – Execute Disable – ON

    2.     Under Performance – Virtualization – ON

    3.     Under Performance – VT for Direct I/O – ON

    4.     Under Performance – Trusted Execution – OFF

Also do this bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

Once you do that..Completely poweroff your machine… not just shutdown but remove the power cord from the machine and then plug it back in and start the machine. Try the install after that it may work

    Hi,

    1. Please verify that the following settings are enable in the BIOS of the physical computer:

    a. hardware-assisted virtualization
    b. hardware-assisted data execution protection (DEP)

    2. Please check if the CPU support the Virtualization

you can see what revision of CPU you have by using a tool such as CPUz (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)

    3. Please verify that the "Virtual Machine Management" service is started and running on the problematic machine.

    4. Please try executing "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto" and reboot the problematic machine to check if the issue will re-occur.

    5. Please also adjust the memory usage of the virtual machine and reboot it to check if the issue will re-occur.

    6. You may also check the "Event Viewer", expand "Custom views" -> "Server Roles" -> "Microsoft Hyper-V",  please check if there is any error message.

    Hope it helps.

Could you give us some details on the processor (manufacturer, type, bios version) that you are using?

yeah, everything that is needed is on. Although, I do not see a "Virtual Machine Management" service.

    Here is the error....

Well, I think that's the first I've heard of pulling the power cord out, but that worked. Awesome, thanx!

Also, do you know off hand if Server 2008 has a partitioning tool built in?

    Cheers!

The built in tool for partitoin is named Diskpart. See link for more information. It's also located in Windows 2003
